We must work together to establish sustainable global peace: Speaker
Dhaka, September 21, 2022 (Bass): Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said that everyone in the society must work together to establish sustainable global peace.
He said, Bangabandhu is the forerunner of world peace. He had an unwavering support for world peace. Therefore, Bangladesh’s role in world peace is inspired by Bangabandhu’s stance towards world peace.
He said these things in his speech as the chief guest at the seminar titled ‘Role of Bangladesh in World Peace’ organized by Bangladesh Army and North South University on the occasion of International Peace Day-2022 celebration at Sena Malnch in Dhaka Cantonment of the capital today.
In the seminar, Bangladesh Army Chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed gave a speech on ‘Bangladesh Armed Forces’ role in establishing world peace’ and former Foreign Secretary and Ambassador Shahidul Haque on ’50 years of Bangladesh’s diplomatic initiative in maintaining world peace’.
Lieutenant General Anwar Hossain spoke as moderator and North South University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Atiqul Islam as co-host in the seminar.
Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said, Bangabandhu fought for the establishment of peace, equality, democracy and freedom by freeing the people from hunger, poverty, exploitation and discrimination. Central to his struggle for political and economic emancipation for the people was the idea of peace. These ideas are reflected in the four basic principles of the 1972 Constitution and successful implementation of the Constitution is possible only through positive changes in the quality of life of the disadvantaged.
He said that just as diplomats have a role in maintaining world peace, parliamentarians also practice parliamentary diplomacy. In various forums like the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, she highlighted the country’s existing laws and policies through active discussions on climate change, gender inequality, food security, etc.
The speaker said that Bangladesh has appreciable contribution in the peacekeeping activities conducted under the United Nations in establishing world peace. Bangladesh today has set a unique example of peace and harmony as the country that sends top peacekeepers to UN peacekeeping missions.
The Speaker thanked the organizers and the two keynote speakers for organizing this seminar to present the active and glorious role of Bangladesh in establishing world peace to the new generation as well as highlighting the future challenges in establishing world peace. Along with that, he thanked the students from the renowned universities of the country for their participation in the seminar through question and answer.
Naval and Air Force chiefs, invited parliamentarians, military advisors and defense attachés of various countries assigned to Bangladesh, vice chancellors of reputed universities of Bangladesh, senior officials invited from armed forces, Bangladesh Police and various ministries, former army chiefs, various international organizations based in Bangladesh, attended the seminar. United Nations and UN Resident Representatives, eminent academics, media personalities and students of reputed universities of Bangladesh were present.
