Bangladesh will develop children as global citizens: Prime Minister

New York, September 20, 2022 (BASS): Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government is going to launch a new national curriculum from next year with the aim of making Bangladeshi children fit for the fourth industrial revolution and become global citizens.
He said, we want to make our children true global citizens. We are introducing a new national curriculum from next year.
The new curriculum will prepare our students for the fourth industrial revolution, the prime minister said in a video recording broadcast at the UN Secretary-General’s Transforming Education Summit on Monday (New York local time).
He further said that this effort will make them aware of climate resilience and make them true agents in implementing Vision 2041 to transform the country into a developed, knowledge-based economy.
The Prime Minister said that we are giving priority to research and development in the field of higher education. For technical education, our aim is to better connect industries.
He said, our children should have skills that they can use anywhere in the world.
He said, we need international cooperation for mutual recognition of qualifications. We are committed to improving basic and lifelong learning opportunities.
The Prime Minister said that textbooks have been prepared in the mother tongue of some of our ethnic groups in the country to promote multilingual education.
“We are teaching the Myanmar curriculum to the millions of children forcibly displaced from Rakhine state and taking refuge on our soil,” he said.
He said his government must invest in regular training and incentives for teachers for quality and inclusive education.
He said, we are committed to increasing the budget allocation for education in proportion to our GDP.
The Prime Minister said that Bangladesh’s development partners must fulfill their financial commitments to achieve SDG-4. A fair share of the resources spent on the global arms race should be allocated to education.
He said, we will continue to monitor SDG-4 indicators from local to national level. Education is the backbone of the nation. We must take an equity and rights based proportional measure to GDP.
The Prime Minister thanked the Secretary General for organizing the Transforming Education Summit and said that the summit reflected the new way of thinking about education with changes in the future of work.
He also said that the Covid-19 pandemic has damaged education across the world. In Bangladesh we have enrolled six lakh school students in non-formal education since December 2021.
The Prime Minister said, we have started vaccinating children above 5 years of age. He said, ‘About 2.3 million students from primary level to higher education are receiving stipends and scholarships.’
He said the government will continue to provide cash incentives through mobile gateways to families facing difficult situations.
He said that our successful programs related to stipend, midday meal and distribution of free textbooks will be continued.
Pointing out that the pandemic situation has opened an opportunity to develop distance education system, he said that in Bangladesh they have developed a mixed education system master plan.
He also said that we will set up around 59,780 multi-media classrooms within the next year. We will focus on bridging the digital divide among our students.
The Prime Minister said that Bangladesh has achieved significant success in achieving equality in the ratio of students in primary and secondary schools.
He said, we will continue to work to reduce the gap in student-student ratio in higher and technical education. Educating our daughters has always been one of my top priorities.
