Excessive private cars are blamed for traffic congestion but there is no initiative to control it. In the first eight months of this year, 10 thousand 825 private vehicles have been registered for movement in the capital. On an average day, 45 private cars are added to the roads of the capital.

6 thousand 648 jeeps have been registered this year. Last year this number was 6 thousand 927. And last year, 14 thousand 321 private cars were registered. These figures are from the Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

World Personal Car Free Day is today. This year the theme of the day is ‘Control fuel consumption and traffic congestion, limit private cars’.

Tracing the origins of the day, it is known that journalist and author Ian Jacobs first came up with the idea of private car regulation in his book The Death and Life of Great American Cities published in 1961. It plays an important role in changing the perspective in urban planning. Since 1962, the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark have been closed to cars and opened to pedestrians only. They continued this trend. Then the idea began to spread in Europe.

It became more widespread during the energy crisis in the 70s. Car Free Day was celebrated in Switzerland in 1974. In the nineties, this initiative expanded further. For example, the world-wide network of carfree cities was developed. Then on September 22, 1998, Car Free Day was celebrated nationally in 34 cities in France.

DTCA’s press conference at Dhaka Nagar Bhavan on Wednesday (September 21) informed that 80 percent of trips in Dhaka are within 5 km. Half of its trips are within 2 km. It is possible to take the reins of private vehicles on short distance trips by bicycle or on foot. DTCA executive director Sabiha Parveen said that today (Thursday) the car-free road will be inaugurated in Mohammadpur housing area.

The day is being celebrated in Bangladesh like other countries of the world to increase environmental protection and health awareness. On this occasion, 60 government and private organizations of the country have undertaken various programs. Every year various events are organized around the day. Various programs are celebrated especially in front of Manik Mia Avenue. This year the program organized on the occasion of the day has been arranged differently. According to the organization, a webinar has been organized on the morning of September 22. Apart from this, posters, leaflets and festoons will be installed on various road islands to create awareness about the center on the day.
