World Suicide Prevention Day is today

Today Saturday (September 10) is International Suicide Prevention Day. Since 2003, the day has been observed every year on this day. Like other countries, the day is being celebrated in Bangladesh with various arrangements.

A recent study found that 13,000 to 64,000 people commit suicide in Bangladesh every year. Bangladesh ranks 10th in the world in terms of suicide rate.

Meanwhile, in a press conference on Friday (September 9), Anchal Foundation said that 364 students of various educational institutions of the country committed suicide in the first 8 months of this year. Among them, 194 percent are school going students.

According to a report published by the World Health Organization in 2014, more than 800,000 people worldwide commit suicide every year.

Experts say that people choose the path of suicide due to family violence, quarrels, physical and mental abuse, failure in love tests, poverty, unemployment, instability of daily life, moral degradation and drugs.

Touhidul Haque, Assistant Professor of Social Welfare and Research Institute of Dhaka University, told RTV News that financial and social inequality is leaving people in despair. And because of this, the trend of suicide is increasing. It is seen not only in Bangladesh but also all over the world.

National Institute of Mental Health Associate Professor Dr. Helal Uddin Ahmed told RTV News that the suicide rate among mental patients is high. A kind of intense hopelessness develops in patients with depression. They think the only way out is to kill yourself. Haunted by this thought, they committed suicide.

Suicide prevention

Everyone must work together to prevent suicide. During the development of children, they should be nurtured in such a way that they can accept failure as well as success. Any type of mental problem or suicidal ideation should be referred to a psychiatrist immediately. All mental illnesses including depression, drug addiction, personality disorders, schizophrenia must be quickly identified and treated properly.

Family ties should be strengthened as well as spending quality time with everyone in the family. The media should always follow approved guidelines when reporting on suicide. Users of social networking sites should also exercise caution in posting comments and pictures about suicide. Here too no attempt can be made to make a suicide look too grandiose. The authorities of social networking sites should also have their own policies on the matter.

DU teacher Touhidul Haque feels that a round the clock hotline for suicide prevention is the need of the hour. He said that it is necessary to launch a government hotline. In which the patient or his family communicates, this may include counseling with the advice of a specialist doctor. So that suicide can be prevented by taking appropriate measures at the right time. For this, this society and crime expert advises everyone to work together from their respective fields.
