Akbar Ali Khan, the country’s renowned economist and adviser to the former caretaker government, is no more (Innalillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He was 78 years old at the time of his death.

Akbar Ali Khan was taken to Evercare Hospital in the capital when he fell ill on Thursday (September 8) night. Doctors there declared him dead.

A relative of Akbar Ali Khan and Evercare Hospital’s public relations office confirmed the matter to Jago News.

Akbar Ali Khan was born in 1944 in Nabinagar, Brahmanbaria. After receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Dhaka University, he received master’s and PhD degrees in economics from Queen’s University, Canada.

His career started with government jobs. During the liberation war in 1971, Akbar Ali was the District Administrator or SDO of Habiganj. At that time, he was tried by the Pakistan military government if he actively worked with the Mujibnagar government. He was sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment in his absence.

After independence, he again entered the career as a bureaucrat. Akbar Ali, who served as Finance Secretary, Cabinet Secretary and Alternate Executive Director of the World Bank, was also an advisor to the former caretaker government. He has also taught in various universities.

His two books on economics namely ‘Economics of Altruism’ and ‘Ajab and Jabar-Ajab Ajab’ are quite popular. Apart from this, his other works include Surprising Bangladesh: Politics in Weird Disguise, Success in Spreading Islam in Bengal: A Historical Analysis, Doubts and Thoughts: About Rabindranath etc.
