The most recent visit of the US delegation to Taiwan has ended

A bipartisan delegation from the United States Congress, led by House Representative Stephanie Murphy, Democrat of Florida, concluded their visit to Taiwan on Friday. This is the latest in a series of visits by high-level US officials to Taiwan.

Murphy’s delegation included Democrat House member Kai Kahle, and Republican House members Scott Franklin, Joe Wilson, Andy Barr, Darrell Issa, Claudia Tenne, and Kat Cammack. The delegation met Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and other senior leaders on Thursday. At the time, both sides pledged to strengthen political and economic ties.

Tsai thanked the United States for showing “rock-solid support for Taiwan” during the meeting. A little over a month ago, China organized large-scale military exercises in the Taiwan Strait. China reacted to the protest of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

In his remarks Thursday, Murphy said Congress could deepen economic ties with Taiwan. That could be done through a “high-quality free trade agreement” with Taiwan, he said. In June, the two countries jointly launched the US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade. The initiative was taken with the aim of deepening economic and trade ties and advancing common priorities in trade.

The US delegation’s visit is widely seen as a show of support for Taiwan and a message to China. China has long vowed to take control of Taiwan and surrounding islands by force, a conflict that dates back to 1949 and is still ongoing.
