The police recovered the body of a three-month pregnant housewife named Kulsum Akhter Sathi (19) from Sharankhola in Bagerhat.
His body was recovered from Dakshin Rajapur village of Rayenda Union of the upazila around 7 am on Sunday.
Kulsoom is the wife of Arif Faraji, a bicycle mechanic of that village.
Kulsoom’s brother-in-law Abdur Rahim said, Kulsoom got married to Arif, son of Panna Faraji of Dakshin Rajapur village of the upazila, a year ago. Since marriage, she was not getting along with her mother-in-law and nuns. Six months ago, her husband, mother-in-law and Nanad beat her. He was then treated at Sarankhola Hospital and later at Khulna Medical. He alleged that torture was done on him at various times.
He said that Arif called around 2.30 am on Saturday night and said that Kulsoom had committed suicide by twisting the veil around her neck. Later they went to the house and found Kulsoom’s body lying on the floor. There were scars on both sides of his neck. Relatives believe that he was strangled and hanged. Kulsoom Akhtar was three months pregnant.
The deceased’s husband Arif said, I returned home from the market at around 11 pm and went to the bathroom. After entering the house, I saw Kulsum hanging from the rice paddy of the south side balcony. He claimed that he was not tortured in any way.
Sharankhola Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Subrata Kumar said, the body of the housewife was recovered from her husband’s house in the morning and sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue. The exact cause of death will be known after the autopsy report.
He also said that a case of wrongful death has been registered in this incident.
