The Russia-Ukraine war has created volatility in global energy commodity markets. This crisis is across Europe. In such a situation, Bangladesh has decided to import energy products from India. Officials said that the import of energy products will start soon.

Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has recently signed an agreement with India’s state-owned Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to import refined petroleum fuel. Diesel, jet fuel, petrol and sulfur will be purchased from IOCL.

Despite Western sanctions on Russia, India has been buying cheap energy products from the country. Bangladesh can now get Russia’s energy products at lower prices through India.

Earlier, Bangladesh imported about 430,000 metric tonnes of sulfur (0.005%), 50,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel and 30,000 metric tonnes of petrol from IOCL from July to December 2020. Before that, Bangladesh bought 4 lakh metric tons of petrol from this company in the fiscal year 2005-06.

Besides, Bangladesh has imported about 8 lakh metric tons of sulfur (0.005%) since 2017 from Assam’s Numaligarh refinery owned by “Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited”.
