Badarkhali coastal township has become abuzz with campaigning around the much awaited election of the ‘Badarkhali Cooperative Agriculture and Colonization Samiti’ of Chakaria upazila, which is known as the second largest association in Asia. The triennial election of this second largest cooperative society in South Asia is being held today Saturday.
According to the election schedule, a total of 34 candidates submitted nomination papers against 12 posts of the association. Later, the candidates got alloted symbols and went to the polling ground. In this election, four candidates for the post of president, five for vice president, five for the post of secretary and 24 candidates for the post of director in 9 blocks have entered the election battle.
According to the presiding officer responsible for the election, four people are contesting for the post of president in this election. They are, former three-time secretary Delwar Hoshain (rose flower), former chairman Abdul Hannan’s elder son Nur Habib Taslim (umbrella), current committee president Nurul Alam Sikder’s son Charwar Alam Sikder (chair) and Manjur Alam.
Meanwhile, five candidates for the post of vice president are in the election battle. Five candidates have been nominated for the post of secretary of the association. They are former editor Mohammad Ali Chowdhury (wall clock), former editor late Iqbal Badri’s brother AM Estefazur Rahman (pineapple), new face Moin Uddin (wheel). The other two are Nazrul Islam and Arif Junayet Russell. Here basically the election battle will be between the first three. 9 directors will be elected from 9 blocks of the association. There are 24 candidates in the election battle against these 9 posts.
During the inspection of Badarkhali electoral area, it can be seen that the election campaigns have accumulated in this coastal town. Around this election, a festive atmosphere has been created in the area, which looks like a national election festival is going on.
It is known that according to the Colonial Cooperative Act, the election of this association is held after three years. A new schedule of elections was announced two months ago as the term of the current management committee expired. Chakaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) JP Dewan Eberkar is the chief coordinator of the election. In the elections to be held under his supervision, two presiding officers Chakaria Upazila Cooperative Officer Jahangir Alam and Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila Cooperative Officer Md. Ramiz Ahmad are serving respectively.
Badarkhali Cooperative and Agricultural Colony Association consisting of 50 thousand people of coastal Badarkhali in Chakaria Upazila of Cox’s Bazar district, the largest township in Asia. The association has 1500 voters. The new management committee will be elected for the next three years through their direct vote. Since the announcement of the election schedule, there has been a lot of enthusiasm among the voters of Badarkhali Samiti and the general public. Candidates are having a busy time going to the voters every day from morning till late night, campaigning and exchanging skills. At the last minute of election campaign, wealthy candidates will buy votes with money like last time. Many senior voters of Badarkhali Samiti confirmed that many people have already prepared for this.
