A private Cessna 551 model plane has crashed in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Latvia after taking off from southern Spain. Debris and oil from the plane were found in the sea.
The British media BBC says that the Cessna plane is registered in Vienna, the capital of Austria. The plane was supposed to land in Germany. But it went to the bucket. There were 4 passengers in the plane.
The plane crashed on Sunday (September 4). All four passengers on the plane are believed to have died.
The news also said that German and Danish fighter jets went to search for the crashed plane. However, a Swedish helicopter locates the plane. Three small vessels and a helicopter are currently working at the crash site in Latvia.
The Latvian Maritime Search and Rescue Service (MRCC) told the BBC they had found three parts of the plane. MRCC spokeswoman Liva Veita said there was no sign of passengers on the Cessna 551 plane that crashed on Sunday. Only oil was seen floating there.
The nationalities of the passengers of the plane could not be confirmed. According to Spain’s EFE news agency, all four are German.
NATO pilots and Swedish officials tracked the plane after the crash. They did not see anyone in the cockpit of the plane.
The plane was traveling from Spain to Cologne, the Latvian Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement. But it changes route during flight. Air traffic controllers were unable to communicate with the plane’s crew.
Data tracking website FlightRadar24 says the plane took off from the Spanish city of Jerez de la Frontera around 1:15 a.m. local time. The plane’s speed or altitude could not be determined.
Lars Antonsson, the head of Sweden’s search and rescue operation, told AFP that the plane may have run out of fuel.
