Barisal City Corporation (BCC) street lights and water lines have been disconnected due to outstanding electricity bills. The West Zone Power Distribution Company (Ojopadico) is disconnecting the electricity line due to the outstanding electricity bill of around Tk 60 crore.
The operation started last Sunday (September 18) from 4 pm and the electric lines of all the roads in the city have been disconnected. Ojopadiko Barisal Division said that this operation will continue.
Due to disconnection of electricity, important roads of 30 wards of the city have turned into haunted houses. Residents suffer from night traffic. They complained that no effective steps are being taken to deal with the situation arising from the city corporation.
Nurul Islam Biswas, assistant engineer of management and conservation circle of Ozopadico Limited Barisal, told Kal Kantha that the city corporation has not paid the electricity bill for at least 10 years. This makes a large number. Not being able to withdraw that money, we are also under pressure from the ministry. Finally, the city corporation’s operation to disconnect the street lights has started. The operation started from Sunday.
ATM Tariqul Islam, Supervising Engineer of Management and Conservation Circle, said that a total of Tk 599.4 million is owed to the City Corporation. Of this, 78 lakhs has been paid by the City Corporation. 15 out of 58 lines were isolated on Monday. And the city corporation has closed all the lines on Tuesday. But we did not disconnect any water lines.
He said, numerous letters have been sent to them for payment of dues. But there was no expected response from the city corporation. The last payment deadline was September 18. But they did not pay even within the stipulated time. As a result, the road line has to be separated by raiding.
This official said, we are separating the lines of various roads on the orders of the ministry. And the city corporation with its own electricians is connecting the disconnected lines and lighting the lights again. If this is done, I do not see any way for the government to withdraw this money.
Swapan Kumar Das, administrative officer of Barisal City Corporation, said that on September 15 Ojopadico received Tk 78 lakh of the outstanding electricity bill from the City Corporation. And on September 18, they disconnected the power lines of all the roads in the city. I cannot say why they did this and with whose permission. Didn’t tell us anything. Suddenly, they disconnected the power lines of road lights and water supply. As of today, all the roads and water lines of the city remain disconnected.
