Police baton-charged job seekers during the Shahbagh siege demanding that the working age be raised to 35. At least 10 people, including a woman, were injured and one person was arrested. The injured have received first aid at various hospitals. The incident took place at Shahbagh in the capital on Friday around 5 pm. Denying the lathicharge and detention, the Shahbagh Police Station said, “We have dispersed them from there because they were blocking the road and creating public disturbance.” No one was arrested.
According to eyewitness sources, around 4 pm, a human chain was held under the banner of job seekers in front of the National Museum demanding that the working age be increased to 35. After the human chain, they took out a procession to Dhaka University TSC. But the procession went to Shahbagh and turned into a siege. They blocked Shahbagh intersection for 35 minutes. At this time, there was a long traffic jam in four directions.
Eyewitnesses said that when the police tried to disperse them, tension arose. At one point, the police started charging them with sticks. At least 10 people including women were injured. The coordinator of the movement, Ibn Tanzil Ahmed, was arrested by the police and taken to the police station. ADC Harun of Ramana Zone assaulted some photojournalists while performing their professional duties. Harun pushed them away from the journalists’ complaint.
One of the agitators told Naya Diganta, we were staging a peaceful siege here. But the police charged us with sticks. Many of us were injured. We will not leave without paying our demands. We will not leave without freeing our brother.
After the lathicharge, till the time of writing this report (8 pm), the agitators were stationed in front of Gate No. 2 of the National Museum. Earlier, the speakers in the human chain in front of the National Museum said that our demand was in the election manifesto of the current government. We have been agitating for this demand for a long time. But they are not paying attention to our logical demands. In our country not even two percent of the total candidates get jobs in BCS rather fixing the age limit for jobs is a farce. It happens only in Bangladesh and Pakistan in the world.
Vice President of Dhaka Metropolitan Chhatra League Al Mamun said, I have come here to express solidarity with my brothers in pursuit of my conscience. This movement has been going on for about 10 years. It should not take so much time to fulfill this logical demand. We don’t know why it’s taking so long.
