The court ordered two brothers Safiqul Islam (38) and Saiful Islam (42) to be hanged for killing an autorickshaw driver. Judge Tariq Hossain of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 of Rangpur delivered the verdict on Wednesday afternoon.
The court announced the verdict in their absence as both of them were already absconding.
According to court sources, Abul Kashem, son of Abdul Haque of Nekirhat village of Taraganj Upazila of Rangpur, earns his living by running auto rickshaws. On August 24, 2016, 4 persons hired his auto-rickshaw saying he was going to a place called Khalya in Gangachara Upazila. They then took the driver Abul Kalam Azad to the paddy field at gunpoint, hacked him to death, left the body behind and fled in an autorickshaw.
Mokhlesena Begum, the mother of auto driver Abul Kalam Azad, who was killed in this incident, filed a murder case at Gangachra Model Police Station as the plaintiff. While investigating the case, the police arrested Safiqul Islam and Saiful Islam, two sons of Mafiqul Islam of Gokalpur Dhanipara village of Rangpur’s Sadar Upazila.
In the preliminary interrogation of the police, the two accused confessed to the fact of killing the auto driver and robbing the auto and gave a confessional statement under section 164 in the court. Later, the police filed a charge sheet against the two accused in the court. Before that, the two accused absconded from the court on bail.
After the testimony of 16 witnesses in the case and after the cross-examination, the charges brought against the accused were proven beyond doubt, the court ordered the death penalty to two brothers Safiqul Islam and Saiful Islam.
Naynur Rahman Tofi, the lawyer handling the case on behalf of the government, said that the plaintiff has been able to prove beyond doubt in the evidence. Also two accused gave confessional statement under section 164 in court after arrest. As the evidence against him proved that he was involved in the murder incident, he ordered two people to be hanged. We are satisfied with this verdict. The court pronounced the verdict in their absence as the two accused were absconding on bail after their arrest. He said that the judgment will be executed after the arrest.
On the other hand, Alauddin Alamgir, the lawyer for the accused, said that he is not satisfied with this verdict. They will appeal to the higher court.
