Eminent people have demanded proper investigation and trial in the death of Preeti Urang, the housekeeper of the flat of Syed Ashfaqul Haque, the dismissed executive editor of Daily Star.

At a press conference organized by ‘Sachetan Nagrik Samaj’ yesterday afternoon at the Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club, the speakers said that an attempt is being made to hide the crime by filing a case of negligent death in the case of the death of the tribal child Preeti Urang. We are concerned about it. We want a society where no one can do wrong. There should be an independent, impartial and unbiased investigation and speedy trial into the unusual death of Preeti Urang. Khushi Kabir, the coordinator of Nima Kari, spoke at the press conference. Islamic University Associate Professor Farha Tanjim Titil presented the keynote address. Professor Geeti Ara Nasreen of Dhaka University, Professor Zobaida Nasreen Kona, President of Women Journalist Center Nasimun Ara Haque Minu, General Secretary of Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad Advocate Rana Dasgupta, Executive Director of ALRD Shamsul Huda, writer-researcher Priscilla Raj, Rehnuma Ahmed and others were present.

Khushi Kabir said, in our society, the lives of domestic workers are considered worthless. The treatment they are subjected to is considered lower than slavery. Preeti Urang is a tribal girl. This child was brought and killed. This cannot be accepted. It’s time we speak up. There should be a proper investigation and trial of Preeti Urang’s death. He said, everyone should stand for the underprivileged people. I demand investigation and trial of this unusual death. And let no such death happen. The government has the responsibility to ensure everyone’s safety. It is said in the main speech that Preeti Urang died unexpectedly on February 6 in the flat of Syed Ashfaqul Haque, executive editor of ‘The Daily Star’ newspaper in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. Syed Ashfaqul Haque was sacked recently. Allegations of murder surrounding Preeti Urang’s unusual death. There is good reason to believe that the reference to Preeti’s age as 15 years instead of 13 years is intentional. A few more child domestic workers were tortured in that flat. We are also vocal in demanding investigation and trial of those incidents. In the press conference, 10 points were demanded including a fair, independent, neutral, influence-free, impartial and transparent investigation and speedy trial of Preeti’s unusual death. Other speakers demanded a proper investigation by the government into how the girl died. According to the law no one can be employed as a domestic worker before the age of 14, but the girl was 13. Why is the law violated in this case? It is the government’s responsibility to find out who killed him.
