BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented that Gazi Mazharul Anwar is a ‘legend’ of Bangladesh.
BNP Secretary General said this to the journalists present at United Hospital in Gulshan on Sunday morning.
Mirza Fakhrul said, a legend of Bangladesh, it would be wrong to say only a lyricist. A creative artist, whose pen has created many wonderful songs and poems in this country.
‘I’m a bit emotional. My personal relationship with him was very close. He’s gone, I just can’t accept it. We have lost a rare personality and a man of extraordinary talent.’
Expressing grief over his death, the BNP Secretary General said, ‘I pray to the Most Merciful God to grant him heaven and to give strength to his family and numerous benefactors to bear this grief.’
Mentioning that the artist’s song inspired us in the war of liberation, he said, ‘His song in the 1971 war of independence was the most inspiring to us and he wrote thousands of songs in later times. We know he’s the greatest artist, the greatest writer, the songwriter, the one who has the most songs on the BBC record.’
Songwriter, filmmaker and producer Gazi Mazharul Anwar was taken from his Baridhara home to the United Hospital in Gulshan at 6:30 am on Sunday and the doctors declared him dead. He was 79 years old. After receiving the news of his death, BNP Secretary General rushed to the United Hospital in Gulshan from his house in Uttara. He consoled Sharafraz Mehdi Uppal, son of the deceased.
BNP Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu, Jasas General Secretary Zakir Hossain Rokon and BNP media cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan were present.
Gazi Mazharul Anwar has wife Zohra Gazi, one son and one daughter. Daughter Rita Rahman lives in the United States. Family members said, he will return home via Dubai in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, member of BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council, Professor Mamun Ahmed, said that an application has been made to the VC of Dhaka University for the permission of the university authorities to pay their last respects to renowned artist Gazi Mazharul Anwar at the Central Shaheed Minar.
BNP Standing Committee Member Khandkar Mosharraf Hossain went to Baridhara’s residence and spoke to his family members and comforted them.
The body of the deceased has been kept in the freezer of Gulshan United Hospital.
