Bangladesh and Cambodia have agreed to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to expand the area of commercial cooperation. It is going to be signed as the Prime Ministers of both the countries have agreed on this.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen agreed to a free trade agreement in a bilateral meeting on Thursday (September 22) night.
Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen said these things in a press briefing.
The meeting was held in the ‘Bilateral Meeting Room’ at the Prime Minister’s residence in New York.
The foreign minister said that when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her interest in the FTA agreement with Cambodia, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen agreed to this proposal.
Various issues of bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and Cambodia were discussed in this meeting.
At that time, the Prime Minister of Cambodia expressed his interest in signing an agreement regarding the export of rice from his country to Bangladesh. He invited Bangladesh to invest in agriculture and health infrastructure development sectors in Cambodia.
Hun Sen assured the Prime Minister of Bangladesh that Cambodia, as the chair country of ASEAN, will continue its all-out efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
Apart from this, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina can help migrant sending countries by promulgating effective recommendations to deal with challenges at the International Organization for Migration (IOM). These countries are facing various problems due to the pandemic coronavirus and war in Ukraine.
The Prime Minister said this during a bilateral meeting with IOM Director General Antonio Vitorino in the ‘Bilateral Meeting Room’ at his residence in New York.
The Prime Minister thanked the IOM for assisting in the repatriation of Bangladeshi victims who were trafficked to various countries including Libya and the European Union.
The IOM Director General appreciated the various steps taken by Bangladesh for the welfare of migrants and expressed hope that the area of cooperation between Bangladesh and IOM will expand further in the future.
Later, the Prime Minister held another bilateral meeting with Kosovo President Vijosa Osmani-Sadriu. Various issues of bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and Kosovo were discussed in the meeting.
Apart from this, Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the same place.
