Sylhet: Former UP member Zainal Abedin was killed by his brothers and nephews during a clash in Sylhet’s Kanighat over a land boundary dispute.

The incident took place in front of Majhbarai Jame Masjid of Haratoil Majhbarai village of Barchatul Union in the afternoon on Monday (April 22).

In this incident, the victim’s elder brother Abdullah (57), a resident of Oman, and another brother, Chaifullah (60), a resident of Dubai, are receiving treatment at the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. Police have arrested three people for their alleged involvement in the murder.

According to local sources, Samshul Haque, the son of deceased Asad Ali’s brother, and his sons, occupied some areas of the northern side of Haratail Majhbarai Jame Masjid. There was a dispute between Samshul Haque and former UP member Zainal Abedin along with his (Samshul Haque’s) five brothers and locals regarding the demarcation of the land.

On Monday around 12 noon, a discussion was held in the presence of villagers about the construction of the imam’s house in the mosque. Meanwhile Zainal Abedin decided to build the imam’s house and his elder brother Samachul Haque and his son Almach Uddin got excited. At one point, Samchul Haque along with his son Almach Uddin, Kamal Ahmad, Suhail Ahmad, Ruhul Ahmad and some others went to Zainal Abedin’s residence and threatened them. In the afternoon, when Zainal Abedin came out of the house, Samshul Haque and his son Almach, Suhail, Kamal, Ruhul and some natives cut Zainal Abedin with sharp weapons and left him bleeding. At that time, when the other brother Chaifullah and Abdullah came forward, they were also chopped and thrown in the field beside the road. Meanwhile, their cousins ​​Abdur Rashid and Abdul Quddus were injured when they came to prevent them.

The injured were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition and doctors declared Zainal Abedin dead. Besides, the other two brothers of the deceased, Abdullah and Chaifullah, are being treated in the hospital’s ICU in a critical condition.

On receiving the information, Kanaighat Circle ASP Alak Kanti Sharma, Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahangir Hossain Sardar visited the spot.

OC Jahangir Hossain Sardar said, Samshul Haque and his sons Suhail Ahmad and Kamal Ahmad involved in the murder have been arrested. Police operation is on to arrest the rest of the accused.
