Riya Khatun (9) who was burnt in fire in Ishwardi in Pabna, died. He died while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 12:15 on Wednesday night.
Deceased Riya is the daughter of Pintu Biswas of Maniknagar Madhyapara village in Salimpur Union of Khatun Upazila and a second class student of Dyad Sahapur Government Primary School.
Riya Khatun’s cousin Saurabh Hossain confirmed the death.
He said that Riya got burnt while burning clay dolls at her house in Maniknagar of the upazila on Wednesday afternoon. Riya was rushed to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex after first aid and was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Doctor Sabrina Rahman of Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex said that most of the child’s body including the rear face was burnt in the fire. He was rescued in a coma and taken to the health complex as his condition was critical and he was shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Locals said that Riya Khatun’s father Pintu Biswas worked at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. His wife locked the main gate of the house and went out. At that time, Rhea and her 5-year-old brother were playing in the yard with gas lights on at home. At one point in the game, Riya was burning clay dolls and the jamaat caught fire. Only Rhea and her younger brother were at home when the fire broke out. The main gate of the house was locked. Due to which the neighbors could not enter the house when the fire caught. Riya’s body was completely burnt in the fire.
When asked, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ishwardi Police Station Rafiqul Islam said that the fire will be investigated.
