Separatists in the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics of Ukraine’s Donbas province have announced their alliance with Russia.

Referendums will now be held in Luhansk and Donetsk to join Russia.

The separatist parliament in Luhansk passed a law on Tuesday. Reuters news.

After that, the leader of Donetsk, Danis Pusilin, said that the referendum will be organized in Donetsk as well.

Russian news agency Tass News reported that the controversial referendum will be held in Luhansk on September 23-27.

After announcing that the referendum would be held in Luhansk, the head of Russia’s appointed administration demanded that a referendum be held in the southern region of Ukraine, Kherson.

Meanwhile, Western countries have repeatedly warned Russia about holding referendums in Donetsk and Luhansk in Donbass. They claim that the referendum will be illegal.

If the referendum goes as planned now, Russia’s relations with the West will worsen.

In 2014, separatists seized parts of Donetsk and Luhansk with the help of Russian troops. Since then they have been claiming themselves as a separate republic.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized Donetsk and Luhansk as independent republics just two days before attacking Ukraine. After that, two other UN member countries recognized North Korea and Syria as independent republics.

However, since then, officials in Luhansk and Donetsk have wanted to join Russia. Now they are going to organize a referendum to do that.

Russian Security Council Chairman and former President Dmitry Medvedev has expressed his support for the referendum.
