Balurghat means spade. This area of Atreyi and Punarbhava rivers has long been the habitat of Leftist RSP. From 1977 to 2009, no other party except RSP could have thought of winning this seat in North Bengal. Palash Burman and Ranen Burman won consecutively five times and four times respectively. But with the change in the state, the escape of Balurghat changed. Trinamool captured Balurghat Lok Sabha in 2014. But they could not hold that seat either. BJP to win Balurghat in 2019. The spade-shovel, which came ‘third’ in the same year, is no longer in the reckoning in this Lok Sabha election.

However, RSP has given the candidate. Left Front nominated Jayadevkumar’s decision. RSP got 72,990 votes in the last Lok Sabha elections. Congress got 36,783 votes. As such, the Left-Congress alliance is fighting with a vote capital of less than 10 percent.

The rise of Trinamool in this seat since 2009. Biplab Mitra, the candidate of this time, was also a candidate that time. He lost by just 5005 votes. The next time in 2014, the Trinamool fielded actress Arpita Ghosh. Arpita won by millions of votes. Even then the second RSP got more than three lakh votes in this seat. But the whole picture changed in 2019. RSP moved to third place. BJP comes to number one. Sukant Majumder, a ‘newcomer’ in politics, defeated Trinamool candidate. Within three years of that victory, Sukanta became the state BJP president. Sukanta’s becoming the president is also one of the most discussed in the Balurghat polls. According to the BJP campaign, Sukanta is the first and only state president of a major party in the state, who hails from North Bengal.

This time, BJP has a different focus on Balurghat. The party is desperate to win the state president. Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have come from this seat only in the campaign. Again, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool’s All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee campaigned for the ministerial revolution of the state who were candidates instead of Arpita. All in all, Balurghat is likely to witness two changes in a row.

Jalpaiguri’s voting trend will flow in the opposite direction! Lotus is measuring water, grass is hoping for the result of the Assembly

According to the results of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has more power in this seat than in three assembly constituencies. Balurghat, Tapan and Gangarampur. From that point of view Trinamool is strong in Itahar and Kumarganj. Trinamool was leading in Kushmondi and Harirampur but the margin was narrow. The impression of that result was also in the last assembly elections. The recent electoral history in West Bengal shows that the style of the Lok Sabha does not match that of the Vidhan Sabha. The Trinamool, which won the assembly in 2016, suffered a major setback in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. But in the 2021 assembly polls, they went against the results of the Lok Sabha polls and seized power in the state. Since this vote is about the formation of the government of the country and not the state, the BJP thinks that the ‘Modi factor’ will work more than the ‘Didi factor’ here. Balurghat results are expected if that trend continues.
