Mamata had criticized Rajnath from the Chakuliya meeting on Monday. On Wednesday, he launched a similar attack on the senior BJP leader from Golsi meeting in Burdwan-Durgapur. He said, Rajnath could have become the Prime Minister. No one would have objected in that case. But now it is Rajnath who is bowing before Modi and saving his mattress. In Mamata’s words, “Modi’s mercy lives! Save the chair by bowing to Modi in the morning and afternoon. You could be the prime minister of the country! No one has stopped.” Mamata also brought up the name of Union Road Transport Minister Nitin in this context. He said, “Nitin could have become the Prime Minister. There was no objection. Go a gentleman!” After that, Mamata said in a tone of regret, “those who riot, whose hands are red, they have become (Prime Minister).”

It is believed that the Trinamool leader wants to instigate BJP’s ‘infighting’ in this way. Before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Modi became the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate. Since then, the ‘conflict’ in the party started coming to light. A section of elders repeatedly pointed fingers at Modi-Amit Shah. They complain about keeping the power axiomatic. Allegations of cornering of senior leaders like Rajnath, Nitin were also raised in the party. Mamata once again provoked that ‘infighting’ on Wednesday. Even before this, he named Rajnath as an alternative to Modi again and again. Even after demonetization at the end of 2016, Mamata proposed Rajnath’s name as the leader. He demanded to remove Prime Minister Modi and form the government at the center with another BJP leader in front. He also named several other leaders including Rajnath. This time, Mamata brought up that topic again.

While campaigning in support of BJP candidate Gauri Shankar Ghosh from Murshidabad constituency in Narsinghpur, Jalangir, Murshidabad on Sunday, Rajnath said, “No force on earth can stop the introduction of the amended Citizenship Act in India.” Taunting Mamata from meetings in Murshidabad, Malda and Siliguri, “Mamata in name, no compassion in nature.” Within 24 hours, the Trinamool leader hit back at Rajnath from a campaign meeting in North Dinajpur’s Chakulia on Monday. On Wednesday, Mamata again attacked Rajnath in the same tone.

At the Jalangi meeting, Rajnath had said, “Once we win our vote, after that I see who, how much mother’s milk he has consumed, can cause incidents like Sandeshkhali.” He said, “I saw it in the paper. Sorry, it’s not my language. I am ashamed to even pronounce it.” After that, Mamata A also said that she did not expect this from Rajnath. Incidentally, when Mamata was in the NDA alliance, she has a ‘good relationship’ with Rajnath. That relationship continued even after he quit the NDA. Rajnath was the Union Home Minister in the first phase of the Modi government. There was also a perception in political circles at the time that Rajnath, as Home Minister, had taken a ‘soft’ approach towards the West Bengal Chief Minister in many respects. Rajnath never insulted Mamata even when she came to meet in Bengal before this. There was a pent-up anger among the grassroots workers of the BJP. Not even with Sarada-Nardakanda.
