Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov has been arrested on corruption charges. This was announced by the government of President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. The statement said that his trial has also begun in a military court in Moscow. Under Russian law, he faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
According to a press release from the Russian Anti-Corruption Agency (ACF), the action against Ivanov is based on allegations of bribery in connection with the distribution of military infrastructure construction documents. The leader, known as Putin’s ‘closer’, was in charge of building military infrastructure in Ukraine’s border areas and occupied territories during the war. He was arrested late Tuesday night by the Russian intelligence department ‘Federal Security Service’ (FSB).

In 2016, Putin brought Ivanov to the Russian Defense Ministry. He was the chief assistant to the Defense Minister of that country, Sergei Shoigu. According to reports published in some Western media, Russia invested heavily in the construction of military infrastructure in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol in 2022. At that time, Ivanov was alleged to have given references to selected companies in return for bribes.
