A mentally challenged youth died after falling into the abandoned deep tubewell pipe of Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority in Nachol Upazila of Chapainawabganj.
The station officer in charge of Nachol Fire Service, Emdadul Haque, said that his body was recovered five hours after he fell into a tubewell in the field next to Purba Nejampur village of the upazila on Friday morning.
Deceased 24-year-old Roni Burman is the son of Chaitanya Burman of that village.
Chairman of Nejampur Union Parishad (UP). Aminul Haque said that new tube wells were installed next to the abandoned deep tube wells in the area. In the morning, Roni accidentally fell into the well pipe.
Hearing the sound of crying from inside the pipe, the people around tried to rescue him, but failed and informed the fire service, he said.
Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority Nachol Deputy Assistant Engineer Abdul Khalek said, “The contractor has installed a new deep tube well next to the useless deep tube well. But still did not explain the work. The mouth of the abandoned deep tubewell was covered with bricks and sandbags. How that young man got there I cannot say.”
Emdadul Haque of the fire service said that after receiving the information, the rescue operation was started from 11 o’clock. Attempts were made to rescue the young man alive after falling about 120 feet through a 12-inch diameter pipe.
Four units from Gomstapur, Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi along with Nachol Fire Service participated in it. Fire service personnel rescued the young man dead around 4 pm.
The body of the intellectually disabled youth has been transferred to the family, said the OC of Nachol police station. Tarekur Rahman Govt.
