Personal Correspondent: The students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CHUTE) who were agitating over the death of two classmates in a road accident have suspended their agitation. They lifted the blockade around 11:30 pm on Thursday after the assurance of the administration.

Meanwhile, the teachers said that the students can stay in the hall till the next syndicate meeting. However, academic activities will remain closed.

After the meeting with the administration, the students said that in the two-hour meeting, they got assurances about the fulfillment of their demands. In view of this, the road blockade is being lifted. They will be monitoring with the administration for the rest. However, they will not leave the hall.

Later, additional registrar Professor Dr. Sheikh Md. Humayun Kabir said, permission has been given to stay in the hall till the next syndicate meeting. However, the academic activities will remain closed until the Syndicate meeting.

Meanwhile, a source in Chuet said that the syndicate meeting may be held on Friday itself.

Earlier, the university authorities ordered the protesting students to leave the hall due to the death of two classmates in a road accident. After a meeting of the academic council of the university on Thursday, it was announced that the class-examinations in Chuet will be suspended for an indefinite period.

However, the protesting students announced that they would not obey this order of the administration.

Both are students of civil engineering department of the university. In this incident, the driver of the bus, Tajul Islam, was arrested from Chittagong on Wednesday.

Angry students had been blocking the road in front of Chuet since Monday afternoon with nine-point demands. In continuation of the movement, the aggrieved people took a stand on Kaptai Road for the fourth day on Thursday. They protested by throwing tree stumps and burning tires on the road.

The protestors demanded 10 points including compensation of Tk 2 crore to the families of the victims, making Kaptai road 4 lanes.
