The ship sank near Islampur Char on the eastern side of the Rohingya camp around 12 noon on Thursday.

Petty Officer of Coast Guard Hatia Station. Salim confirmed this information to The Daily Star.

However, the naval police and coast guard officials could not tell the name and address of the missing sailor.

On receiving the information, two teams of Coast Guard and Nalchira Naval Police went to rescue the cargo and the missing sailors around 2 pm.

But rescue operations are hampered by hostile weather and unusual waves in the sea.

Sub-Inspector Mehdi Zaman in charge of Nalchira Naval Police Station told Daily Star, “The cargo sank in the Bay of Bengal estuary. We tried to go to the spot with a trawler but the river was too rough. So could not reach the spot.’

Coast Guard Officer. Salim said, “During the sinking of the cargo, the master of the ship jumped into the water and disappeared. The rest of the sailors hold the ship’s mast.’

In the afternoon, 11 sailors were picked up in a Chittagong-bound ship using that route, he said.

When asked, the representative of the ship’s owner, Mohammad Ohayedul Islam, told the Daily Star over the phone, “The ship was going to Dhaka with goods from Chittagong. Accident due to adverse weather conditions.’

When contacted, Hatiar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shubashis Chakma told Daily Star, ‘Coast Guard is working to rescue the missing sailor.’
