At least 155 people have died in floods caused by weeks of heavy rains in East Africa’s Tanzania. More than two lakh people have been affected by it.

The country’s prime minister confirmed this information on Thursday (April 25).

Rainfall increased especially in coastal areas and the capital Dar es Salaam. Due to this, the number of deaths reported two weeks ago is more than double.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa told parliament that the El Niño climate pattern has worsened during the ongoing monsoon season, with resulting flooding destroying roads, bridges and railways. Flooded schools were closed and emergency services rescued people trapped in the water.

Majaliwa warned those living in low-lying areas to move to higher ground and called on district officials to ensure the delivery of essential items to those whose homes were washed away. He said that more than 51 thousand families have been affected by the rain.

Heavy rains are falling in the East African region, with flooding also reported in neighboring Burundi and Kenya.

As of Monday, 35 people have been reported dead in Kenya and the number is expected to rise as flooding continues across the country.

At least four bodies were recovered from flooded houses in the Mathare slum in the capital Nairobi on Wednesday.

According to local media reports, more bodies have been recovered from Mathare river.
