National Human Rights Commission Chairman Kamal Uddin Ahmed has commented that maternal and child mortality rate is increasing in the country as a result of child marriage.

He said, “Being a child, you have to conceive another child. Being a victim of domestic violence and torture. Again, children are suffering from malnutrition and other diseases from birth

“Girl child dreams are shattered through child marriage. It is inhumane and a violation of human rights. A social movement should be developed to free the country from child marriage.”

A press release informed that he said this at an event in Dhaka on Thursday on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Plan International Bangladesh.

Kamal Uddin Ahmed said that the Human Rights Commission has taken initiatives in coordination with various ministries and organizations to end child marriage.

“There are many social problems in our society including abuse of women and children, lawlessness in the health sector, juvenile delinquency, drug addiction. These must be prevented on a priority basis.”

Prime Minister’s Advisor on Education and Culture Kamal Abdul Nasser Chowdhury, Minister of State for Women and Child Affairs Simin Hossain Rimi, Member of Parliament Arma Dutta, Executive Director of Mass Literacy Campaign Rasheda K Chowdhury were present on the occasion.
