French President Emmanuel Macron has called for Europe to be militarily strengthened, economically reformed and freed from US influence. Otherwise ‘Europe may die’, he warned.
“Europe is in danger of dying,” Macron said at a French university event on Thursday (April 25). We are not prepared to face this risk. Military, economic and other pressures could weaken the European Union.”
In addition, Macron spoke about keeping Europe free from the influence of the United States. According to him, if Europe becomes dependent on the United States in the military sector, they will be at risk for a while.
He said, “There is no defense without defense industry. We have been going through underinvestment in this sector for the last few decades. We need to produce more military equipment. We have to produce at a faster pace and we have to produce as Europeans.”
He added, “We need to show that Europe is not subservient to the United States and that Europe knows how to talk to other regions.”
Macron has repeatedly spoken of the US’s disengagement over the past few years. But many European leaders say they have no other choice but the United States at the moment. Some believe that Macron is talking about France’s own industrial interests.
