Police have arrested two more accused in the case of abduction and beating of Delwar Hossain, the chairman candidate for Singra Upazila Parishad election in Natore. A total of five people have been arrested in this case.
This information was confirmed in a press release sent by the office of the Superintendent of Police on Wednesday (April 24) night.
The arrested are Sujan Sarkar (32), son of Nitai Sarkar of Itali village of Singra upazila, driver of Lutful Habib Rubel, and Niren Chandra Prang (48), son of Monindra Nath Pramanik of Raipur village of Raninagar upazila of Naogaon. They were arrested from Raipur village of Raninagar upazila of Naogaon around 12 noon on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the candidate Delwar Hossain, who was injured in the kidnapping and beating incident, will return home from the hospital on Thursday (April 25) after undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for 10 days.
Delwar Hossain’s son Munayem Akash told Dhaka Post at 1 pm on Thursday, Rajshahi Medical College has released his father from the hospital, now he is waiting for the clearance. I will return to my home in Singra with my father by this afternoon.
Superintendent of Police Tariqul Islam said that operations are being conducted in different parts of the country to arrest those involved in the incident. Soon everyone will be arrested and brought under the law.
Incidentally, on the last day of submission of nomination papers for the first phase of the upcoming 6th Upazila Parishad election, Singra Upazila Parishad chairman candidate Delwar Hossain went to submit the copy of nomination papers in the district office election after applying online on April 15 afternoon. At that time, the miscreants who were already there beat him and took him to a black microbus. Later he was beaten again and sent home. From there, the family members took him to Nato Modern Sadar Hospital and the doctor on duty referred him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
The family of the victim has been blaming the rival candidate Lutful Habib Rubel and his supporters for this incident. An accused named Sumon, arrested in this case, gave a statement in court that Sumon along with other accused kidnapped and beat up Delwar Hossain on behalf of Lutful Habib. The Election Commission (EC) has condemned Lutful Habib for his involvement in the incident. Upazila Awami League also mourned Lutful Habib Rubel in party terms. After that Lutful Habib Rubel withdrew his nomination paper on the instructions of Junaid Ahmed Palak, the brother-in-law of Lutful Habib Rubel, Minister of State for Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology.
As a result, Natore District Election Officer and Upazila Returning Officer Abdul Latif Sheikh Delwar Hossain was officially declared unopposed on Tuesday (April 23) afternoon.
