A child named Riya Khatun (12) died of burns while burning clay dolls at Ishwardi in Pabna. He died on Wednesday (April 24) at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 12:00 pm.

Riya was the daughter of Pintu Biswas of Maniknagar Pathshala Mor, Salimpur Union of Khatun Upazila and a second class student of Dyad Sahapur Government Primary School.

According to local sources, Riya was playing in the courtyard with her five-year-old younger brother after lighting the gaslight. At one point, while burning clay dolls, the clothes he was wearing caught fire. Rhea’s entire body was burnt.

He was quickly rescued and taken to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex, after first aid he was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Riya died while undergoing treatment there.

Sabrina Rahman, a doctor on duty at the emergency department of Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex, said that most of the body including the rear face was burnt in the fire. He was brought to the health complex in a coma. After initial treatment, the child was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Ishwardi police station Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter and said that the fire will be investigated.
