Today is Khulna’s birthday

Today (April 25) marks the 143rd birthday of Khulna, the town of Kolghensa in the Sundarbans. For a long time, the Greater Khulna Development Struggle Coordinating Committee and Bangladesh Debating Society Khulna organized a grand birthday celebration in the city through various programs. This time cake cutting and discussion has been organized on the occasion of birthday.

The industrial city of Khulna is located on the banks of Rupsa and Bhairab rivers in the southwestern part of the country. Khulna is the third largest city of Bangladesh after Dhaka and Chittagong. Khulna is one of the oldest river ports in the country.

In 1842, the headquarters of the new district was established in Khulna, centered on Bhairab-Rupsabidhaut Punyabhoomi Nayabad Thana and Kismat Khulna. After the establishment of Khulna Sub-division, Khulna became important due to the increase in the administrative area of ​​the British and its geographical position.

Khulna district was established on April 25, 1882 through gazette notification of Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira with an area of ​​4,630 square miles and a population of 43,500 in a span of just 40 years. And according to that statistics, Khulna’s 143rd birthday is today. Earlier Khulna was a subdivision of Jessore district. British ruler W M Clay served as the first magistrate of the district.

From the brief history of Khulna, there is disagreement about the origin of the name Khulna. But the most popular opinion is that the name Khulna is derived from the ‘Khulneswari Mandir’ built in the name of Khulna, the second wife of Dhanpati Saudagar.

Khulna originates from the word ‘Culnea’ written in the record of the rescue of the sailors of the ship ‘Falmouth’ in 1766. According to scholars, the name Khulna is derived from ‘Kismat Khulna’ Mauza. Many believe that Khulna comes from the word Jessore-Culna written on the British period map.
