The court sentenced the stepmother to life imprisonment in the case of strangulation of a 12-year-old child in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria.
District and Sessions Judge of Brahmanbaria Sharmin Nigar announced the verdict in the presence of the accused, said the counsel for the state (PP) Mahbubul Alam Khokon.
Sharmin Akhter (36), wife of Shamim Mia of Mehari village of Mehari union of the upazila.
Regarding the case, PP Mahbubul Alam said, “Shamim Mia’s first wife left two sons and a daughter and went abroad. Shamim married Sharmin to raise three children.
“As Sumaiya was small, Shamim used to work on the dis line in Dhaka with his two sons, keeping her with her stepmother. On February 21, 2023, Sumaiya’s dead body was found in the house. On hearing the news, Shamim came home with his two sons. They saw a black mark on Sumaiya’s neck and informed the police.”
He said that Shamim’s son Arman Bhuiyan filed a murder case in Kasba police station, accusing Sharmin and some others of unknown identity in this incident.
After the arrest, Sharmin confessed to killing Sumaita by strangulation and gave a statement under section 164 in the court, said the lawyer of the state.
He said that the investigation officer of the case filed the charge sheet in the court making SI Liaqat Ali Sharmin of Kasba police station the sole accused.
After the testimony, the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined 10,000 taka; PP Mahbubul Alam said that if he does not pay, he will have to stay in jail for another six months.
