Child strangled to death in Kasba, stepmother gets life sentence
AH Rafi, Brahmanbaria: [২] The court sentenced a woman named Sharmin Akhter (36) to life imprisonment for strangulating her stepchild in Kasba, Brahmanbaria. In addition, he was sentenced to another 6 months of rigorous imprisonment without paying a fine of 10,000 taka.
[৩] Brahmanbaria District and Sessions Judge Sharmin Nigar gave the sentence on Wednesday (April 24) afternoon. Convicted Sharmin Akhter is the wife of Shamim Mia of Mehari village of Mehari union of upazila.
[৪] According to the court documents, the first wife of Shamim Mia of Mehari village went abroad leaving behind two sons and a daughter. Shamim Mia married Sharmin Akhtar to take care of these three children. Later, as the two sons grew up, they left Sumaiya (12) and were living in Dhaka and working in the DIS line. On the morning of February 21, 2023, the body of child Sumaiya was found in the house. Shamim Mia’s two sons came home from Dhaka on hearing this news. They found black marks on the neck of Sumaiya’s body and informed the police. Shamim Mia’s son Armin Bhuiyan filed a case of murder in the police station with stepmother Sharmin Akhtar as the main accused and some unknown others as accused. Police arrested Sharmin Akhter in this case and filed a 7-day remand in the court.
[৫] When the court granted a two-day remand, Sharmin confessed to the murder during interrogation. Sumaita was suffocated in the court and confessed to killing her under section 164. In her deposition, Sharmin said that Sumaiya was asked to read and have dinner at night, which led to an argument. Because of this, Sharmin killed her step daughter Sumaiya by squeezing him with both hands. Sub-inspector Liaqat Ali of Kasba police station accused Sharmin in this case and filed the charge sheet in the court. Later, after argument and witness examination, District Judge Sharmin Nigar’s charges were proved, and Sharmin Akhter was sentenced to life imprisonment and 6 months of rigorous imprisonment without paying a fine of 10,000 taka.
[৬] Brahmanbaria Court Public Prosecutor Mahbubul Alam Khokon said that the accused who received the prison sentence was present in the court during the verdict. He has been sent to the district jail. The learned court has ordered that the period of remand shall be excluded from the term of imprisonment after his arrest.
