Hezbollah vs. Israel: The possibility of a wider war is real

Lebanon-based armed group Hezbollah claimed that a drone attack was carried out on the country’s airbase north of Acre, Israel. According to Al Jazeera’s report, this is Hezbollah’s first attack inside Israel since the start of the war in Gaza on October 7 last year.

Hezbollah said in a statement on Tuesday that it carried out a coordinated attack from the air using drones that set traps and explosives, targeting two Israeli bases between Acre and Nahariya.

Zain Khadr, Al Jazeera’s correspondent from southern Israel, said Hezbollah was trying to send a message to Israelis with these increased attacks deep into northern Israel. If Israel targets and kills their commanders, it will further escalate tensions on the part of Hezbollah. “What we have seen in recent months is Israeli and Hezbollah fighters carrying out drone strikes to destroy infrastructure,” he said.

Zain Khadr also said that this is an ongoing conflict. Two Lebanese civilians including a woman and a child were killed last night. Although the conflict was mainly confined to the border area, around 70 civilians were killed. So, sporadic skirmishes are taking place so far but the possibility of a larger war is also real.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah recently shot down five Israeli drones. Local Hani al-Dali, an expert on the Palestinian resistance movement, said Hezbollah has stepped up military operations against Israel. This has political and military implications for the Israeli government and military. Hezbollah sent an important message to Israel through this.

Hani al-Dali said that Hezbollah is in an advantageous position against the Israeli military through these military actions. He believes that Hezbollah is trying to increase its military capabilities in the face of continued attacks by Israel.
