367 lives were lost on the road during Eid Yatra: Road Safety Foundation

According to the report of Road Safety Foundation, both road accidents and fatalities have increased during the Eid Yatra this year compared to last time. 358 road accidents occurred during the 15-day Eid trip from April 4 to April 18. 367 people were killed and more than 1500 people were injured in these accidents. Where 285 people lost their lives in 240 accidents during Eid-ul-Fitr last year.

This information was given in a press conference at their office in Dhanmondi of the capital on Wednesday (April 24). The report was prepared by Road Safety Foundation based on 9 national dailies, 7 online news portals, electronic media and own data.

According to the report, 20.35 people were killed in an average of 17.14 accidents per day for 15 days before and after Eid. This year, 24.46 people were killed in an average of 23.86 accidents per day during Eid Yatra. According to this year, accidents have increased by 39.20 percent and fatalities have increased by 20.19 percent.

It was said in the press conference that the number published in the media is 493 people. In Dhaka’s National Orthopedic Hospital (Pangu Hospital) alone, 454 people were admitted with road accident injuries during the three days of Eid, most of which were motorcycle accidents. In this reality, the number of injured people in hospitals across the country will be more than 1500 in 15 days. 63 women, 74 children among the dead.

It is said that 156 people died in 183 motorcycle accidents, which is 42.50 percent of the total number of victims. And the motorcycle accident rate is 51.11 percent. 68 pedestrians were killed in the accident, which is 18.52 percent of the total fatalities. 41 people, i.e. 11.17 percent, were killed by vehicle drivers and assistants.

During this time, 7 people were killed and 8 people were injured in 3 boat accidents. 19 killed and 17 injured in 14 railway accidents.

According to the statistics of vehicle-wise casualties, motorcyclists and riders are 156 (42.50 percent), bus passengers are 18 (4.90 percent), truck-pickup-covered van-tractor riders are 26 (7.08 percent).

The Road Safety Foundation says all of the accidents were caused by excessive speed. Since it is not possible to stop the movement of low-speed three-wheelers on the highways due to the design defects of the country’s road infrastructure, even if the highways are cordoned off at some distance, temporary service roads should be provided for low-speed vehicle movement.

In addition, increase the initiative to create skilled drivers; fixing the wages and working hours of drivers; Capacity building of BRTA; The Road Safety Foundation has given some suggestions including ensuring smooth enforcement of traffic laws to transport owners-employees, passengers and pedestrians.
