The Road Safety Foundation has presented this picture of the road accident on Wednesday (April 24). This information was presented in a press conference organized at the office of the organization in Dhanmondi of the capital. The organization said that most people died in two-wheeler motorcycle accidents during Eid Yatra.

According to the Road Safety Foundation, 285 people lost their lives in 240 accidents during Eid-ul-Fitr last year.

Chairman of the organization Professor AI Mahbub Uddin Ahmed presented the written report in the press conference. According to the report, 63 women and 74 children were killed in the accident. 156 people died in 183 motorcycle accidents, which is 42.50 percent of the total deaths. 68 pedestrians were killed in the accident, which is 18.52 percent of the total fatalities. 41 people were killed, the driver and assistant of the vehicle.

At this time, 7 people were killed in three boat accidents. 19 people were killed and 17 injured in 14 railway accidents.

The Road Safety Foundation compiled the report based on data from nine national dailies, seven online news portals and electronic media.

Pointing out the lack of continuity of effective initiatives to control road accidents, the Road Safety Foundation says, ‘Road accidents have become a constant source of terror in our lives. But there is no continuity of effective initiatives to control accidents. Everything is going smoothly. Most road accidents occur due to mismanagement of the road transport sector. To improve this situation, sustainable road transport strategy should be formulated and implemented. This requires political will.’

Last year, 20.35 people were killed in an average of 17.14 accidents per day during Eid Yatra. This year, 24.46 people were killed in an average of 23.86 accidents per day during Eid Yatra. Besides, five families were completely wiped out in a road accident during Eid celebrations. Besides, 74 students of schools, madrassas, colleges and universities were killed.

Division wise statistics of total accidents say that 30.79 percent of deaths occurred in 29.05 percent accidents in Dhaka division, 11.71 percent in 13.40 percent accidents in Rajshahi division, 12.80 percent in 14.52 percent accidents in Chittagong division.

According to the report, the main causes of road accidents are defective vehicles, reckless speed, inefficiency and physical and mental illness of drivers, non-fixed pay and working hours, low speed vehicles on highways, reckless riding of motorcycles by youth, ignorance of traffic laws among the public and Incidents like non-compliance, poor traffic management, lack of capacity of BRTA and extortion in the public transport sector.

In the press conference, several recommendations were made, including increasing initiatives to create efficient drivers to reduce accidents, fixing the salary and working hours of drivers, increasing the capacity of BRTA, ensuring smooth enforcement of traffic laws to transport owners-employees-passengers and pedestrians.
