Today marks 11 years of the Rana Plaza tragedy

Today marks the 11th anniversary of the Rana Plaza collapse, the worst tragedy of the garment industry in the country.

Various human rights organizations, labor organizations and left-wing political parties, including the Rana Plaza Survivors Association, usually organize various programs every year to commemorate the victims of the tragedy.

On April 24, 2013, 1,138 people were killed and more than 2,000 were injured when Rana Plaza, an illegally constructed building containing 5 garment factories, collapsed in Savar.

Later, the police registered a murder case accusing Sohail Rana. He has been in jail since his arrest.

The trial officially began on January 31, 2022, with the deposition of witnesses in the murder case filed in the Rana Plaza collapse case.

On July 18, 2016, Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Court Judge SM Quddus Zaman framed the charges against the accused and ordered the trial to begin.

But it stalled as most of the accused appealed to the High Court challenging the validity of the order.

After the disposal of the appeal on January 31, 2022, District and Sessions Court Judge AHM Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan recorded the statement of the then Deputy Inspector (SI) of Savar Police Station, Wali Ashraf.

In this tragic incident, the then SI of Savar police station Wali Ashraf filed a murder case against the owner and others for negligence in the construction of the building.

On June 1, 2015, Assistant Superintendent of Police Vijaykrishna of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) filed a charge sheet against 41 people including Kar Bhawan owner Sohel Rana.

A total of 594 people were made witnesses in this case.
