Bangladeshi youth dies at the border while crossing into Greece

A young man named Hafizur Rahman (30) died of a stroke while crossing the border from Albania to Greece. The family of the deceased confirmed the death yesterday (April 23). Currently, the body of the deceased is lying in the morgue of Mother Teresa Hospital in Albania.

The deceased Hafizur Rahman is the son of Ayub Ali of Gutgaon village of Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj.

According to sources, Hafizur Rahman of Sunamganj went to Kosovo on March 29 with Orak permit visa in the hope of a better life. Even after staying in the country for some time, he could not adapt himself to the language and environment. So Hafizur dreams of going to Greece from that country. Because his brother and many relatives are in Greece. After that, he went to the bordering country of Albania with some other migrants from Kosovo. After going to Albania for two days and staying overnight in a hotel, 5 Bangladeshi immigrants including Hafizur tried to cross the border to Greece through a broker on April 20.

Hafizur died of heat stroke in the border mountains while entering Greece. Meanwhile, the broker sent him to the hospital and left for Greece with the rest of the migrants. But the hospital authorities declared Hafizur dead and sent the body to the morgue. Then on April 23, the deceased’s family confirmed the death.

Abdur Rahman, the brother of the deceased, said, ‘I sent my younger brother to the European country of Kosovo with great difficulty. But he died on the way from Kosovo to Greece. I still can’t believe the news. However, we confirmed the death of my brother by contacting Albania Hospital.’

When contacted, Biswajit Kumar Pal, Counselor (Labor) of the Bangladesh Embassy in Greece, said, “The family members of the deceased have contacted. We are communicating in Albania. Efforts are underway to send the body to the country.’
