NHL playoffs: Canada’s first-round home ticket prices skyrocket | Global News Network

--

All four Canadian teams have National Hockey League playoff home games coming up, and if you want to see one in person, it’s going to cost you a pretty penny.

Vancouver and Winnipeg both play at home on Tuesday night, followed by Toronto and Edmonton on Wednesday.

As of early Tuesday afternoon ET, tickets to the game in Toronto were the most expensive, followed by Vancouver, then Edmonton and finally Winnipeg, according to Ticketmaster.

In Toronto, the most expensive ticket for Game 3 of their series against Boston was $2,289.50.

Moshe Lander of Concordia University’s economics department, who also specializes in sports economics, said skyrocketing prices come down to supply and demand.

“It’s very simple,” he told Global News.

“There’s a certain number of seats available in the stadium, and all of a sudden, Leafs fans find a way to get interested in the team and decide it’s time to go to the game, which starts to show when demand increases and supply settles down.

“The Maple Leafs are just trying to take advantage of it. No different than the Jets, Canucks, Oilers or any other American team that makes the playoffs.”

Here are ticket prices ahead of Canada’s home games this week:

Canada’s Stanley Cup drought boosts demand: Rand

Rand said the demand for tickets could be because Canada has won the Stanley Cup since 1993.

“So everyone is hoping this year will finally come,” he said.

“Winning gets old. So, even though it’s counterintuitive, if the Maple Leafs or any team continues to have success, you’re actually going to see it become more difficult to raise ticket prices because people will say, ‘Been there,’ done that. “

In today’s age of social media, consumers also want to be “watched,” Rand said, and watching the playoffs — especially the next bowl game, which is heavily televised — is one way to achieve that goal.

It’s a way for people to show conspicuous consumption, he said.

Rand added that the younger generation also seems to value the experience of accumulating physical objects, and watching the NHL playoffs is one of those unforgettable experiences.

Of course, he said, die-hard fans should also attend the games.

Considering demand and supply, he does not think the price will be too high.

“People are willing to pay for it. It’s one thing if you see half the field empty. But the arena is getting packed. Obviously, these prices are not outrageous,” he said.

At some point, the company buys tickets, but the tickets will be distributed to someone regardless, Rand said.

“It’s still people that go there. It is the company that does not go there,” he said.

Rand said people might miss the days when rents were lower, but ultimately times are different.

“It’s a different era. Again, because your generation values experiences over possessions, those types of experiences come about 41 times in the regular season and maybe five to 10 times in the playoffs.”

Rand also said sports teams are good at their business.

“The reality is that sports are very good at controlling their product and limiting the number of games they offer, which helps with pricing power,” he said.

Ticket prices ‘only go up’ if a team advances to the next round Rand said there will be a spillover effect from next year’s ticket.
