G is a 24 hour digital bureau: Taiwan’s earthquake-ravaged eastern county of Hualien was hit by dozens of aftershocks Monday night and Tuesday morning. However, only minor damage was reported and no casualty was reported in the incident. TSMC said no impact was seen at work.
The largely rural and sparsely populated Hualien was hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on April 3. It killed at least 14 people and caused more than 1,000 aftershocks since then.
Buildings across large parts of northern, eastern and western Taiwan, including the capital Taipei, shook throughout the night. The largest earthquake was of magnitude 6.3.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration said the magnitude of the earthquake that began Monday afternoon was an aftershock of the larger earthquake on April 3.
Wu Chien-fu, director of the seismological center, told reporters that the aftershocks were a ‘concentrated release of energy’ and more such events could be expected. They probably won’t be as powerful though.
With heavy rains forecast for all of Taiwan this week, people in Hualien should be prepared for more disasters, he added.

The world’s largest contract chipmaker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), which has factories on the island’s west coast, said a small number of factory workers had been evacuated, but facilities and security systems were operating normally and all workers were safe.
“Currently, we do not expect any impact on operations,” they said.
Investors shrugged off worries about the quake, with TSMC’s Taipei-listed shares rising 1.75 percent on Tuesday morning.
Taiwan is located near the intersection of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.
In 2016, an earthquake in southern Taiwan killed more than 100 people. In 1999, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake killed more than 2,000 people.
