School student killed after being taken hostage, youth sentenced to 10 years in prison

The juvenile court of Barisal has sentenced the youth to 10 years imprisonment for the murder of Nayan, a class 10 student of Bharasakathi village in Ujipur of Barisal district. The name of the convicted youth is Ashiq Abdullah (22). He is from the same village. Son of Osman Howlader.

Monday (April 22) court judge. Yarab Hossain gave the verdict. Bench assistant Kazi Humayun Kabir confirmed the matter.

Citing the case, he said that on April 27, 2019, school student Nayan went to pick vegetables with his grandparents and younger sister in the field next to the house. At this time, a boy came and called Nayan. As Nayan did not return even at 9 o’clock in the night, his grandparents searched in different places. Nayan’s father Sobhan worked in a factory in Chittagong. After receiving the news, he also left for home. At around 10 pm, Nayan’s mother received a call from a mobile phone that was with her from a number saying that Nayan had been taken hostage. He also said that Nayan will be released if he pays Tk 20 lakh. The voice speaking on the mobile was also a teenage voice. Nayan’s family agreed to pay 10 lakhs. However, at 7 am on April 28, Nayan’s body was found floating in the Sandhya river in Ramzankathi village of nearby Babuganj upazila.

In this incident, Sobahan Howladar filed a case against unknown persons at Babuganj police station on April 28.

On May 29, 2022, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) SI Ghulam Kawsa filed a chargesheet against Ashiq Abdullah, the sole accused. The judge sentenced Ashiq to 10 years in prison on the testimony of 17 people.
