More than a dozen earthquakes were felt off Taiwan’s east coast. Among these, the strongest earthquake was magnitude 5.7. The tremors were also felt in some surrounding areas including the capital Taipei. The meteorological administration of this island territory said that these earthquakes struck on Monday.
However, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in the earthquake that hit Taiwan.
Taiwan’s Meteorological Administration said the remote eastern county of Hualien was the epicenter of the earthquakes. At least 14 people lost their lives in the area earlier this month after a powerful earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale.
Taiwan felt hundreds of aftershocks after the high-magnitude earthquake. Located near the intersection of two tectonic plates, Taiwan is extremely earthquake prone.
Earlier, in 2016, a powerful earthquake in southern Taiwan killed hundreds of people. Before that, in 1999, more than 2,000 people died in an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 on this island.
