In the second phase of the Sixth Upazila Parishad election, 14 candidates have submitted nominations for the post of Chairman in Sadar and Panchbibi Upazilas of Joypurhat. Out of these 14, 12 are leaders of various positions in the ruling party. Candidates submitted online on Sunday (April 21) till 4 pm on the last day of filing nominations.
District Election and Returning Officer Fazlul Karim said that in the second phase of Upazila Parishad elections, nomination papers have been submitted completely online in two upazilas of the district. In this, 14 candidates for the post of chairman, 12 for the post of vice chairman and 8 candidates for the post of female vice chairman have submitted nomination papers.
It is known that 8 people have submitted nominations for the post of chairman in Sadar upazila and 6 people in Panchbibi upazila. District Awami League Vice President Mohsin Ali, Publicity and Publication Secretary AM Masud Reza, District Women Awami League President Shammeem Aziz, District Jubo League Member Khawaja Shamsul Al Amin, Sadar Upazila Awami League President Anwar Hossain, Vice President Dewan filed nominations in Sadar Upazila. Mostakul Islam Mostak, Sadar Upazila. Hasanuzzaman Mithu, former joint general secretary of the League and Aminul Islam Masud, convener of the District People’s Rights Council.
Besides, 8 candidates have submitted nominations for the post of Vice Chairman in Sadar Upazila. They are, Ashok Kumar Tagore, Ali Akbar Md. Izaharul Islam, Ujjal Minji, Zakaria Mondal alias Shimul, Munchur Rahman, Rakibul Hasan, Shamim Ahmed and C.M. Afraim Kabir. And 4 candidates have submitted nominations for the post of female vice chairman. They are Farhana Rahman Bithi, Achma Bibi, Nachima Akhter and Rumana Parveen.
Meanwhile, Panchbibi Upazila Awami League vice-president Zahidul Alam, organizational secretary and current chairman Monirul Shahid Mondal, Panchbibi Upazila Awami League president Abu Bakar Siddique, joint general secretary Syed Zafar Chowdhury alias Suman Chowdhury, Kusumba Union A. League general secretary and current vice chairman Sohrab Hossain Mondal and Samgeun Nahar are said to be involved in BNP politics.
4 candidates have submitted nominations for the post of Vice Chairman in Panchbibi Upazila. They are Ahiduzzaman Chowdhury, Akram Hossain Talukdar, Khalekul Islam and Farhad Alam. And 4 candidates have submitted nominations for the post of female vice chairman. They are – Tamanna Begum, Rajinara Tuni, Rebecca Sultana and Moushumi Akhtar.
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the selection of nomination papers for the second phase is on April 23. Appeal against Returning Officer’s decision 24 to 26 April. Appeal disposal from 27 April to 29 April, last date for withdrawal of candidature is 30 April. Symbols will be allocated on May 2, and voting in 150 upazilas will be held on May 21.
