International Desk: 150 years after the theft of 32 gold and silver artefacts from Ghana, UK has returned them. However, these items have been returned to the country as a loan for only six years. Aljazeera news.
Present-day Ghana was formerly under the Asante Empire. This dynasty ruled the country from 1701 to 1901. In the 19th century, during the fierce conflict between Britain and the Asante Empire, these items were looted from the royal court of Asante by the British soldiers.
Since then, 15 items have been kept in the British Museum and 17 in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Ghana’s chief negotiator Ivor Agyeman-Duah confirmed the return of the items to AFP on Saturday. But he also said that these valuable things were given to them as loans.
The European colonial powers ruled the African continent for many years. This time they have taken various valuable things from these countries to their respective countries. However, the countries are campaigning hard to get back these recently looted African artefacts.
One such country is Nigeria. The country continues to negotiate for the return of thousands of metal objects dating back to the 16th and 18th centuries of the ancient Benin Empire. These items are currently stored in museums in the United States and Europe.
