It has been 11 years. On this day of 2013 (April 24), a terrible, horrifying and heartbreaking incident took place in Savar, which created a stir around the world. In that incident, some lost their mother, some father, some brother, some sister, some wife, some husband, some lost their beloved person. The nine-storey Rana Plaza of Savar Bazar bus stand collapsed at 8:45 am that day. This is the biggest man-made disaster in the country’s history.

There were five garment factories from the third floor to the ninth floor of that building. About four thousand garment workers worked in it. With the collapse of the building, four thousand garment workers were buried under the rubble. Save me, give me water, cut my hand and get me out – the cry. The cries and wails of the relatives came down to the entire Savar and spread throughout the country. The sky becomes heavy. In no time, ordinary rescue workers, fire brigade, army, police, Ansar, RAB and other law enforcement agencies came.

With their efforts, the living and the dead started coming out of the rubble. Ambulances were lined up on both sides of the highway after blocking the Dhaka Aricha highway in Savar to take the rescued injured to the hospital. Thousands of volunteers from various organizations rushed to send them to the hospital, provide first aid and all kinds of support. The living, dead and half-dead people were taken out one by one.

Within hours the death toll rose. The hospital morgue was filled to the brim. Later the bodies were taken to the Adharchandra school grounds in Savar. Bodies were left in a row on the school porch. Boards were hung in school grounds to count the number of dead bodies. Coffin boxes are lined up. By that time, the relatives of the people buried in the rubble from different parts of the country rushed in front of Rana Plaza. The whole sky became heavy with their cries and cries.

Even though the loved one was not found alive, relatives thronged the Adharchandra school grounds to collect his frozen body. After a while, when the hearse came, he ran to see the body of his loved one. 5/6 days passed like this. As the days go by, more and more bodies are recovered.

Meanwhile, after the collapse, the rescue work continued to be disrupted due to lack of skilled manpower and necessary materials. Seeing the slowness of the rescue operation, common people jumped into the rescue work without thinking anything. No one had minimal rescue experience. However, in order to save the lives of the people trapped under the building, they risked their lives and entered the rubble. Even though the hands and feet were cut off, they brought out each living soul. Ignoring the smell of rotting corpses, they searched for living beings. Because of those people, 2438 people were rescued alive from inside the rubble. Apart from this, 1138 bodies were recovered.

Meanwhile, on the 5th day of the building collapse, on April 28, a survivor was found inside. The rescue workers came to know her name Shahina. While trying to save him, a rescue worker named Kaikobad got burnt and got seriously injured. After fighting with death for seven consecutive days, he also went to the country of no return under treatment on Saturday night, May 5.

Apart from this, an ordinary rescue worker named Babu participated in rescue work for seven consecutive days in this incident. He risked his life and rescued 30 living people from the rubble. He fell ill himself while carrying the dead, half-dead bodies on his shoulders from the rubble. Placed in the balcony of Dhaka Medical College. Two days after he mysteriously disappeared from there, his body was found in front of a locked balcony of the hospital.

When the body was recovered, the police found clear signs of strangulation. Whether he was killed or committed suicide is not yet known.

On the 17th day of the building collapse, a miracle happened moments before the army announced the end of the rescue operation. Another life is found within the rubble. Miraculously, Reshma survived by eating four biscuits and a bottle of water. On the 17th day around 3 pm, the rescue workers saw a stick moving from inside. Later they found Reshma alive and took her to CMH Hospital in Savar. Government ministers including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina immediately rushed to the hospital to see Reshma, who miraculously survived.

Then, on the 20th day, GOC Major General Chowdhury Hasan Sohrawardy of the Ninth Infantry Division, the head of the coordination committee formed in the rescue work, officially announced the completion of the Rana Plaza rescue work through a press conference. After the rescue work, he said through the press briefing that 1 thousand 127 dead and 2 thousand 438 people were rescued alive. After the rescue work, the place was handed over to the Dhaka district administration.
