Delwar Hossain, the abducted candidate for the post of chairman of Singra Upazila Parishad of Natore, was finally elected unopposed after various speculations. He remains a single candidate yesterday as his only rival and brother-in-law Lutful Habib Rubel, brother-in-law of State ICT Minister Junaid Ahmed Palak, withdrew his nomination. Natore District Election Officer and Upazila Election Returning Officer Abdul Latif Sheikh said that if there is a single candidate for any post, if the deadline for withdrawal of candidature has passed according to the law, the returning officer can officially declare him elected unopposed on the next day. Since there is no candidate other than Delwar Hossain for the post of Singra Upazila Chairman, Delwar will be declared unopposed on Tuesday. However, the polling for the post of Vice Chairman Male and Female will be held on the scheduled date.
Lutful Habib Rubel, brother-in-law of State Minister for Posts, Telecommunication and Information Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak has withdrawn his candidature from Singra Upazila Parishad elections. As a result, another chairman candidate, Delwar Hossain, who was abducted and beaten up, became elected unopposed. Last Sunday morning, Lutful Habib Rubel announced his withdrawal from the election in a video message. A few hours later, at noon, Rubel made a written request to District Election Officer and Returning Officer Abdul Latif Sheikh regarding the withdrawal of nomination papers. He said that it is not possible to participate in the election due to personal and family reasons. Incidentally, two candidates filed nomination papers for the post of chairman in Singra Upazila Parishad elections.
After verification, the returning officer Lutful declared the nomination papers of Habib Rubel and Delwar Hossain valid.
Delozar Hossain’s elder brother Mujibur Rahman expressed his joy at being elected unopposed. He thanked journalists and law enforcement officials in front of the Returning Officer’s office after 4 pm yesterday.
Delwar Hossain’s son Munayem Hossain Akash said, “My father won unopposed, now just waiting for the announcement.” We are really happy with the result. This is the victory of justice against injustice. However, we are still worried why those directly involved in the kidnapping have not yet been arrested. Hope the law enforcement forces arrest them soon.
