At least five rockets have been fired at US military bases in Syria. These rockets are fired periodically from Iraq to neighboring Syria.

This is the first attack against US forces since February this year. Reuters reported this information in a report on Monday (April 22).

At least five rockets were fired from the Iraqi city of Jumma toward a US military base in northeastern Syria on Sunday, two Iraqi security sources told Reuters. It was the first attack against U.S. forces in Iraq since Iran-backed groups halted their attacks against U.S. troops in early February.

According to Reuters, this attack from Iraq happened at a time when Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani returned home after a visit to the United States. He also had a meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House during his visit to the US.

Two security sources and a senior army officer said a rocket launcher mounted on the back of a small truck was parked in the Syrian border town of Jummar. A military official said the truck caught fire when an unlaunched rocket exploded just as the fighter jet was in the air.

“We cannot confirm whether the truck was bombed by US warplanes without an investigation,” said a military official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident.

Iraqi security forces have been deployed to the area and have started searching for criminals who fled the area using other vehicles, a security official based in Jumma town said.

The Iraqi Security Medical Cell, the government agency responsible for disseminating security information, said in a statement that Iraqi forces had launched a “comprehensive search and operation” targeting criminals near the Syrian border and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

An army official said the truck has been impounded for further investigation and preliminary investigations suggest it was destroyed in an airstrike. “We are in contact with coalition forces in Iraq to share information about this attack,” he said.

It should be noted that the attack came a day after a member of the Iraqi security forces belonging to Iran-backed groups was killed in a huge explosion at a military base in Iraq early Saturday morning.
