The Bangladesh Film Censor Board blocked director Raihan Rafi’s ‘Amimansit’ movie, alleging that it resembled a real incident of a brutal murder.

After verifying the details of the movie, the board says that it contains brutal murder scenes. The content of the story, screenplay and dialogues are similar to reality. As such it is ‘not suitable for public display’.

Censor Board Deputy Director Md. Shahidul Alam Sacchu, the producer of the movie “Amimansit” on Wednesday. This was informed in a letter signed by Moinuddin.

When the teaser of the movie came out on February 12, some of the viewers were saying that Rafi has made the movie based on a true story. Someone again finds a similarity with the murder of journalist couple Sagar-Rooney. Although no one related to the movie nor the Censor Board directly mentioned Sagar-Rooney’s name.

The Censor Board cited the reason for declaring the film ‘unscreenable’, saying, “It contains scenes of brutal murder. The content of fiction, screenplay and dialogues are similar to reality. Such stories have actually happened and cases related to the incident are pending in the High Court. The plot/content of the film being similar to the pending case may give wrong message and hamper the investigation.”

Earlier, a member of the Censor Board told bdnews24.com on condition of anonymity, “The Sagar-Rooney murder is similar to the story of this movie. Sagar-Rooney murder is now under trial in court. That is why objection has been raised from the Ministry of Home Affairs.”

On February 11, 2012 Sagar Sarwar, news editor of private TV channel Machranga and his wife Mehrun Rooney, a senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were murdered in a rented house in West Rajabazar of the capital. Law and order forces have not been able to solve the murder mystery even today.

The Censor Board’s letter said that in view of the application on March 3, the film was examined by the members of the Censor Board the next day on March 4. It was then re-examined by board members on April 22 for further scrutiny. After re-verification, a detailed discussion about the film was held in the board meeting.

“In that meeting the members of the Censor Board opined that the film ‘Unresolved’ is not suitable for public screening as the elements described in the first, fifth and seventh clauses of the Code for Censorship of Films in Bangladesh, 1 of 1985 exist.”

As a result, according to rule 16 (5) of the ‘Bangladesh Censorship of Films Rules, 1977’, the Censor Board canceled the film’s censor letter application or refused to grant the censor letter.

However, those concerned with the movie can appeal if they want, said the deputy director of the Censor Board. Moinuddin.

He told Glitz, “There is an opportunity to file an appeal with the government within 30 days of receiving this letter. Those concerned with the movie can appeal if they want.”

On February 29, OTT platform iScreen had announced the release of ‘Undecided’. But the date got pushed back due to Censor Board objections. Then the release was announced as a special Eid surprise. That didn’t happen later either.

Regarding the Censor Board’s objection, Riaz Ahmed, project director of iScreen, told Glitz, “Why they objected to the movie, we don’t understand. We will appeal now.”

Earlier, director Raihan Rafi told Glitz, “Any kind of story can be made into a movie. I don’t really understand what there is to object to in this movie.”

What’s in the movie?

Who killed Arnav and Niruk? Who are the masked people? What will unravel this unsolved mystery? On February 13, filmmaker Raihan Rafi wrote this post on Facebook, revealing the teaser and poster of the movie ‘Unsolved’.

After the release of the teaser, it can be seen from some comments on social media, they are pointing towards the murder of the famous journalist couple Sagar-Rooney. Even though an era has passed, the mystery of the event has not been opened yet. The case is pending in court.

The 40-second teaser reveals some important facts about the murder in the form of written dialogue. They are like this – ‘The murders took place between half past one and two o’clock in the morning. I think it’s a robbery case…’; ‘Journalists, neighbors, relatives all destroyed the crime zone signs. What was I to do’; ‘No one killed them. They killed themselves’; ‘It’s definitely a strange case! Otherwise that day…’.

As seen in the poster of the movie, Imtiaz Barshan and Tanjika Amin are playing the lead roles. A few people stood behind them; Whose face is tied with a black cloth. But who they are, will be answered in the original film.

When asked if the film is about the murder of the journalist couple Sagar-Rooney, director Raihan Rafi told Glitz, “Some people are saying that it is about the Sagar-Rooney incident because it is a journalist’s story. That is why the censor board wants to watch the movie. I don’t know why it has been stopped now.”

Riaz Ahmed, project director of iScreen, said, “This is not a movie about Sagar-Rooney’s murder. If there is a partial match, then whether it should be stopped, I don’t know.”

Regarding the story of the movie, Riaz said, “This movie is about the murder of a couple in 2018. The couple happened to be journalists. Because of this, some may think that it is about the murder of Sagar-Rooney. But we are not saying that.”
