Review of Monogamy | Review of the movie Last Defenders of Monogamy directed by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki dgtl

A song from the drama ‘Shwaik Gale Ward’ comes to mind. The lyrics are like…

The moon was in the sky, The night is quiet

wife at home, lover outside

There is no sleep in Henry’s eyes

Shafkat, the hero of the web film ‘Last Defenders of Monogamy’, is in the same situation as that Henry. Chanchal Chowdhury, one of the best actors of Bangladesh, played the role. The director of the film, Mustafa Sarayar Farooqi, has tried to make Shafqat, the middle-aged hero with salt-and-pepper hair, look as good as he likes.

The monotony of a marriage or the stagnation of a long-term romantic relationship between a man and a woman can become like a closed pond after a certain point. This is not impossible even in the case of a very affectionate relationship. A new love or infatuation may come to find the open sky in life that is suffocating in that daily life.

Even if it is uncomfortable to hear, even if it seems illegal to enter a new character in the middle of a relationship of loyalty, the path of denial is sometimes very difficult, with various emotional tensions. Director Faruqi has mainly created the background of the film with a philosophy of monogamy, or becoming polygamous from monogamy. Although such images of the romantic tribe have been repeated throughout the world forever. Not a new trend. What is owed is Faruqi’s own style of storytelling.

Shafkat is the big boss of a reputed advertising agency. Into his seemingly happy, successful married life, a girl much younger than him, Lamia (Zeffer Rahman), falls into who knows what. Lamia’s work ethic, modern-minded appeal seems to breathe new life into her intellectual middle-aged boss. Lamia is like the afternoon dawn flower in Shafqat’s daily life. Faruqi brought Zeffer Rahman in the role of singer Lamia in this web movie for the first time. Her performance as Lamia is a breath of fresh air. His straightforward speaking, acting performance impressed by the boss’s work and lectures is surprising. However, if there was a little more dedication in his character, it would have been great. At the end of the day, even if it’s a strange cry, it’s love! But as the script was written and in the first act Farooqui did as Jeffer wanted. This is normal for a new heroine.

Chanchal Chaudhary’s performance as Shafqat should have been discussed earlier, given the artist’s importance, and Jeffer was discussed first. The reason for this is that the character who believes in strict monogamy, like Shafqat’s wife and children around him, moves away from his ideals. Chanchal has undoubtedly portrayed well the turbulent situation of suddenly becoming bipedal. But the suggestive bed sequence with Lamia suddenly howling with guilt feels awkward. This scene, however, produced some mild humor. If it can be assumed that Farooqi is trying to match Shafqat’s over-emotional nature, that is a different story.

Shafqat’s love for the wife (Samina Hussain Prema) feels so loose. Shafqat’s wife’s name is Samina in the film. To be honest, the storm that was expected in the mind of a caring wife like Samina after the second woman came into her husband’s life, did not create a stir. On the other hand the role of Lamia’s lover is also very brief. Grain not tied. Despite these gaps, the director succeeds in making the film interesting enough to watch continuously.

Another thing must be said. Shafqat’s acting as a teenage boy Shuddha (Shuddha) and Rai’s (Pratyayi Prothma Rai) mature performances are commendably strong points of the film. They have created a different sentiment. Shafqat and Lamia have dialogues where the difference in values of two different generations becomes clear. It becomes clear that, however intimate they may be, the two mentally inhabit two different worlds. This polarization creates a contemporary perspective in the film. Modern speed gives the movement of the film.

Most of the shooting of ‘Last Defenders of Monogamy’ was done indoors. There is little outdoors in Cox’s Bazar. Shafqat and Lamia’s repeated encounters and interactions in the metro rail are touching. The light and dark cinematography blends well with the various moments of the story and is comfortable for the eyes.

Music direction of Pavel Arin, music and lyrics of the film are very pleasant. Like ‘The house that binds hope/ That house is empty/ Together with us/ This being alone.’ Again in this loneliness there is a desire to be close. Like ‘You sit beside me my friend / I’m in the clouds / I’m in the grass’. Not without writing one or two catchy lyrics in this way. The songs tie in beautifully with the characters and the plot.
