Bangladesh has demanded the implementation of the commitments made earlier to deal with climate change. At the same time, developed countries have been urged to come forward to keep the global temperature target.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury made this call at the Petersburg Climate Dialogue held in Berlin, Germany on Friday (April 26). The minister said that mutual trust and confidence should be brought back in the UN climate change talks. The promises made earlier must be implemented. Science should be given importance in all activities to combat climate change. All countries, especially developed countries and those with the capacity, must come forward to limit the global temperature target of the Paris Climate Agreement to 1.5 degrees.

He said that the decision to double the aid in climate adaptation activities should be implemented. International support is needed for full implementation of Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan, National Adaptation Plan, Nationally Determined Contribution of Bangladesh. The minister clearly highlighted the views of least developed and developing countries, including Bangladesh, on important issues related to climate finance decision-making at the upcoming COP29.

Environment Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury on the sidelines of the Petersburg climate dialogue, President of COP28 and COP29, Saudi Arabia’s chief climate negotiator Khalid M. Almehed, State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action of the German Federal Foreign Office Jennifer Lee Morgan, State Secretary of the German Federal Chancellery. Jorg Kukis held bilateral meetings with various dignitaries including representatives of Egypt, Denmark. He received an invitation from Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Chief Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev for the prime minister to attend COP29.

The environment minister’s speech attracted the attention of ministers from 40 countries participating in the Petersburg Climate Dialogue. Many of them spoke in support of the environment minister’s opinion. Apart from ministerial representatives of 40 countries, German Chancellor Olaf Schloss and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev were present at the conference.
